SPAY: our sterilisation programme

Addressing the root cause of overpopulation in Sri Lanka.

As our flagship service, spay/neuter is at the heart of everything we do here at Dogstar – but why?

There are hundreds of unwanted puppies and kittens born every day in Sri Lanka, but there aren’t anywhere near enough good (or even bad) homes to go round. As a result, unwanted litters are often dumped on the road at just a few weeks old.

Females that have litter after litter every season become weakened and exhausted. And males can get badly injured in fights over females.

There are so many reasons why we believe it pays to spay, and all of them come back to increased animal welfare and reduced suffering.

Stopping problems before they start

We aim to spay/neuter every animal we meet on the street in order to stop the cycle of suffering in its tracks. But that's not all…

Rabies is endemic in Sri Lanka, but it's 100% preventable through vaccination. That's why every animal we sterilise is also given a rabies vaccine at the time of their operation.

The Dogstar Spaymobile

Our spay/neuter truck travels all over the western province of Sri Lanka providing free sterilisation services for both pet dogs and street dogs.

Our world class Sri Lankan veterinary team perform hundreds of dog spay/neuter procedures a month – and it all takes place onboard a purpose-built, solar-powered surgery truck called the Dogstar Spaymobile!

Since 2015, we have sterilised over 80,000 animals – but it’s not all about numbers!

Our spay/neuter teams are committed to providing a service that prioritises animal welfare, and we are regularly updating our equipment, processes and protocols so we can continue to offer the highest standard of care.

We want to provide a service that’s tailored to each animal, which is why, as well have having a dog spay/neuter clinic, we have a separate clinic just for cats.

The Catstar Cat Clinic

We might be called Dogstar Foundation, but we also have a very soft spot for cats. That's why in 2023, we made the decision to bring our cat sterilisation programme in house and opened a cat only spay/neuter clinic.

Sponsor a spay

For £25, you can sterilise a Sri Lankan street dog on a loved one's behalf by purchasing one of our spay/neuter gift e-cards.
