Vesak festival

Community, Compassion, Charity.

Vesak is Sri Lanka’s most important Buddhist festival, celebrating the birth, enlightenment, and passing of the Buddha.

It’s a time for kindness, generosity, and reflection, with people coming together to help others—humans and animals alike.

One of the most beautiful aspects of Vesak is the spirit of giving. Across Sri Lanka, people take part in Dana (acts of generosity) by offering free food and drinks at Dansal stalls. It is a time when communities unite to share what they have, reflecting the values of selflessness and goodwill.

Respecting all life

Vesak also reinforces the Buddhist commitment to respecting all living beings. During this time, all slaughterhouses and meat shops across Sri Lanka close, allowing animals a rare moment of peace. Many people choose to go vegetarian and some even release captured animals as a symbolic act of compassion.

It is a reminder that every life matters and that kindness should extend to all creatures.

A festival of light and hope

Vesak transforms Sri Lanka into a glowing celebration of light, colour, and community. Streets are illuminated with intricate Vesak lanterns (koodu) and beautifully decorated pandals (thoran), each telling stories from the Buddha’s life. Families visit temples for prayers, meditation, and acts of charity, deepening their connection to the festival’s values.

Curry for Canines

In celebration of Vesak this year, we’re inviting you to host your very own dinner party to raise vital funds for street animals in need.

By taking part in Curry for Canines, you’ll be creating and sharing a delicious meal with loved ones, all in honour of your favourite street dogs and cats.

Together, we can turn compassion into action.
